What you'll bring to the team

 

 

 

We’re looking for a creative yet highly technical Technical Designer to join our team, specialising in the design and development of special effects (SFX), including mechanical animatronics and immersive A/V experiences used in LEGO® models across Merlin attractions worldwide.

This is a unique opportunity to apply your engineering and creative problem-solving skills to bring LEGO® stories to life on a global stage, ensuring world-class quality, innovation, and safety standards are met in every project.

 

 

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Special Effects Development – Design functioning SFX elements that meet creative briefs and are operationally fit for purpose, integrating seamlessly with LEGO® content and wider attraction systems.

  • Quality, Safety & Compliance – Ensure all deliverables meet Merlin’s Health, Safety & Environmental standards, alongside relevant regulatory requirements.

  • Budget & Risk Management – Monitor design hours against budgets, flag risks early, and provide progress updates to stakeholders.

  • Logistics & Post-Handover Support – Deliver clear documentation, handovers, and efficient support for snagging, warranty, and outstanding tasks.

  • Operational Integration & Best Practice – Design with long-term operational needs in mind, using approved parts and supporting best practice development across projects.

  • Technical Expertise & Problem-Solving – Use technical drawings and specialist knowledge to solve challenges while ensuring guest experience and safety remain paramount.

 

 

Qualifications & Experience

  • Higher level qualification in Mechanical/Electronic Engineering, Product Design, or equivalent career experience.
  • Proven experience in design and development of special effects for attractions, themed environments or other entertainment industry.
  • Skilled in reading and interpreting technical drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Experience working in a dynamic workshop, studio or manufacturing environment, including working knowledge of workshop machinery such as mills, lathes, CNC machinery and 3D printers etc.
  • Working knowledge of how effects integrate with LEGO Models
  • Experience in budgeting, cost estimation, and supplier coordination
